Whipping post
Fort Stanwix, Rome, New York
"Constructed in 1758. The fort provided a safe place for pioneers and settlers that were
moving into central New York State in the 1700's. The post is a whipping post, used as an
incentive/inspiration for prisoners, suspected spies and the like.
"The fort was closed for the winter, but, after I rang a service bell, a very
accommodating woman opened the door and allowed us to enter for this private tour." --Tom
