National War Memorial

"Designed originally to commemorate the 60,000 Canadians who died in the First World War,
this memorial has since come to commemorate all of Canada's war dead. In May 2000, the
remains of an unidentified Canadian Soldier who died in World War I were taken from France
and buried in a tomb in front of the National War Memorial in Ottawa. This Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier was created to honour the more than 116,000 Canadians who have sacrificed
their lives for peace and freedom." --Susan
