Where in the world is that Phoon?

Have you seen the blue marble on one or more of the Phoons pages? Here is an example.

If you have the (free) Google Earth program on your computer, you can click the blue marble on pages like that one and enjoy the ride to the place on Earth where that Phoon photo was taken.

(If you have Google Earth but are not seeing impressive 3D-looking views when you visit places such as Goosenecks State Park, try this: (1) check the Terrain box, bottom left corner and (2) in menu Tools > Options, set Elevation Exaggeration to 1.5.)

[Please wait a few seconds for "top marble contributors" to appear...]

Put your Phoon on the maps

Phoon marker maker

Would you like to see your Phoon on the maps? You need to provide three bits of information:

1. the Phoon web page address

Sample valid forms:   abe   or  abe.html   or  http://phoons.com/abe.html

2. the latitude and longitude of the Phoon (see below)

The marker maker accepts several forms of information to capture latitude/longitude. (The coolest form is a Google Earth pushpin because it also can captures tilt and rotation.)

Google Earth push pin (see instructions below)
Google Maps "link" (see instructions below)
Raw lat/lang... for example, 37.47724,-122.00699
Coordinate style 2: 37°28'38.06"N 122° 0'25.16"W
Coordinate style 3: N 37° 28.634 W 122° 0.419

If you have a favorite internet map program that gives you coordinates in another form, tell me about it--I would like to make that work for you. Still, I hope that you will try Google Earth.

3. your computer name

Capturing a Google Earth Location

(Do not email me a push pin. Instead, right-click your push pin and click Copy. Then Paste into the Phoon marker maker.)

  1. Download the free Google Earth program.
  2. In Google Earth, find the place where the Phoon photo was taken.
  3. Before you create a push pin, look straight down at the Earth with NO TILT.
  4. Click the push pin icon at the top, and a yellow push pin will appear on the screen and a little window will appear.
  5. Drag the new push pin so that its point points to where the Phoon was.
  6. Click OK in the little window.
  7. Now that the location has been established, you can now add tilt and rotation and adjust zoom to get the view that you like. (If you have a mouse with a wheel: To TILT, press-hold the wheel and drag up/down. To ROTATE, press-hold the wheel and drag left/right.)
  8. When you are done with tilt and rotate, right click the push pin and click Snapshot View. This captures the lat/long, tilt and rotate.
  9. Go to the Phoon marker maker page and paste (Ctrl-V) into the coordinates box.

Capturing a Google Maps Location

  1. Double click the map at http://maps.google.com and click-drag to identify where the Phoon was.
  2. Click the "Link to this page" link. A box named "Paste link in email" appears.
  3. Copy the contents of that box into the Phoon marker maker coordinates box.

Thanks for joining in the fun!
